What is Social Impact Travel?

The main goal of social impact travel is to have a positive effect on the communities in the places you visit. It’s based on the idea that in addition to benefitting travellers, travel can also be an opportunity to make a positive difference in the world.

How Can Travel Make a Positive Social Impact?

There are many ways that hotels, tour operators and other travel professionals can make a positive social impact. To start with, they can use their resources to foster education, create jobs for community members and support local projects.

Choosing hotels, camps and businesses which place social impact at the heart of their work, is a simple way to make a positive social impact that both enriches your experience and supports your destination.

At Andean Roots Perú we’re very proud of the fact that many of our favourite places actively work to benefit the communities where they operate. Here are a few of the incredible things they’re doing.

1. Improving Access to Education
Quality education is an incredibly important aspect of building strong societies. And many luxury travel companies are doing their part to make sure that the children in their communities have access to it, from early childhood all the way through higher education.

For example, Wilderness established Children In The Wilderness, a non-profit organisation that educates children about conservation. They run programmes to teach local kids about the environment and support their development, while also promoting the protection of endangered ecosystems.

Employing Community Members

Tourism can provide massive benefits to local economies – but only when travel companies make an effort to prioritise the community’s needs. One way to do this is by hiring local staff.

Not only does this create job opportunities; it also makes community members a central part of the travel industry’s development. When local residents are involved in the day-to-day activities of hotels and tour companies, they can provide a valuable perspective that helps those businesses make a positive impact.

This is exactly the case at Qorihuairachina Comunity, one of our favourite comunities. At Andean Roots Perú almost all of the employees are from Qorihuarachina, including in many managerial positions. Beyond the obvious economic benefits of employment at the camp, many community members receive valuable training that allows them to work at other lodges and tourism companies too.

This is one way for travel operators to invest in long-term community development, rather than opting for short-term solutions.

In light of the communities where we were born and that saw us grow, laugh, and learn the wisdom of the Andes, most importantly the meaning of Ayni or “sacred reciprocity”, we appreciate our origins here and through our work we seek to support the communities that have supported us.

Andean Roots Peru is dedicated to promoting and organizing community projects within the Cusco region. Although tourism plays an important role in Peru´s economy and provides employment for many people, small communities are often denied the direct financial support of large scale commercial tourism.

For many years these villages have been forgotten by our Peruvian government, especially those villages located in the middle of the mountains which do not even have access to cars and people can only arrive by horses. We consider that our region Cusco receives more than a Million tourist per year which would make you think that Cusco is the richest region BUT it’s not. Considered as one of the poorest region in Peru due to the money collected from tourists being sent to Lima.

Our first objectives within the family of Andean Roots through organizing community projects will include the distribution of educational materials for children, given that school systems in smaller communities can always use any extra support for the education of the youth. Another objective is to distribute warm clothing to the distant communities, especially those in high altitudes where winter temperatures can reach -15°C (5°F).

The mission this foundation realizes is to assist the children of our communities of school age through providing the school materials and their uniforms, at the same time we share the happiness of Christmas with the children in our communities.

Purchase of School Supplies:

Every March the foundation heads for a specific community with the purpose of supporting an average of 30 – 40 children. We buy them the corresponding school supplies, “according to what the school requires”.

Uniforms for Our Children

Children of those communities lack of resources for the acquisition of new scholar uniforms, so very frequently the uniforms are used for more tan 2 years , likewise they lack of shoes for the school and they use sandals ”Ojotas”, in the same way they have no book bags, among others.

Thanks to your reservations the Andean Roots Foundation assist to our children every beginning of school year with the purchase of uniforms that includes:

  • Shoes
  • Trousers
  • Jerseys
  • Shirts
  • Sweaters
  • Backpacks

Christmas with the Andean Children of Peru

All the children anxiously await the arrival of Christmas:

Every Christmas the Andean Roots family leads to the high land communities to share happy moments with these children. Making them smile in a day where we share a special Christmas breakfast, plays, dances, presents for each of our children.
